Polish Memorial in main cemetery in Dortmund

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 8 June, 2007 in the main cemetery (Hauptfriedhof) in Dortmund. The memorial is located across the street in the section labelled "Jewish cemetery" on some maps. It holds the old and new Jewish cemetery sections as well as several foreign gravesites.

It reads, "To the Polish victims of the war 1939-1945 / A memorial built by their fellow sufferers." (Polakom ofiarom vojny 1939-1945 / Pomnik ten wzniesli towarzysze niedoli / Radeck.) The names of the dead are listed on the sides. After the list of names it says, "and 95 unknown." There are 243 Poles buried here.

The visit to this location was paid for by a research grant from the
American Public University System.
"Educating those who serve."
