Cemetery section for foreign war dead in the Park Cemetery in Essen

Pictures and text by Mark R. Hatlie

These pictures were taken on 10 June, 2007 in the Parkfriedhof in Essen. According to the info sign in the center of the cemetery, there are 405 POWs and forced laborers in this section of the cemetery. The sign here contradicts that account.

.
The sign reads, "402 prisoners of war and forced laborers have found a final resting place in the Park Cemetery. They were taken to Essen from many countries in Europe, especially the Soviet Union and Poland. They died here of starvation or inhumane treatment or died in the bombing. 139 of them are buried in this section."
